I first met Matt Riser in 2009 when I was coaching at Sacred Heart and he was a volunteer at Southeastern Louisana. As the head coach at University of Memphis you can say he's come a log way!
Matt was born and raised in Mississippi and played football and baseball all through high school.
As you will hear, 9/11 affected his likely recruitment to Ole Miss. He wound up going to Pearl River Community College, before transferring to Tulane.
It's fair to say he had an eventful two years at Tulane. In his junior year Tulane went to the College World Series. His senior year they had to deal with the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
After college he worked as a GA at Tulane before joining the staff at SELA.
He spent 6 years as an assistant, working his way up the coaching ladder, before taking over at Head Coach where he spent the next 10 years.
In 2023 he got the job at Memphis and is building the program in much the same way at he led SELA.
